What Are Command Points In Acupuncture (2024)

Table of Contents:

Command Points are individual points that have strong and broad effects on their related part of the body, used to treat any imbalance in their designated areas from any etiology (hot, cold, excess, deficiency) at any stage (i. e. chronic or acute). They give energy to all levels – body, mind, and spirit. Command points provide feedback about our diagnosis of CF and ground energy and return control back to Nature. There are five command points in each of the twelve organ channels, totaling sixty. These points, on touch, pressure, prick, or heating, set forth specific physiological processes in the body.

The eight extraordinary confluent points are a popular set of acupuncture points in the modern practice of acupuncture. Much emphasis is placed on the use of ‘command’ points, situated below the elbow and knee. The 360 points of the whole body have their command in the sixty command points. Command points are the “bread and butter” of this system of medicine. While any appropriate point can be used for its spiritual connotation based on the patient’s needs, some points give virtually all of the benefits.

Command points are found distal to the elbow or knee flexure and include Source points, Element points (including Tonification points, Sedation points, and Horary points), and Junction points. The last step in treatment involves the treatment of a patient’s CF directly. The overriding idea behind classical five element acupuncture is that by treating a person’s root imbalance, the rest of the meridians and associated points are treated.

The command points are listed along with the Luo, Xi-Cleft, and Source points. Tonification, sedation, and horary points are marked for each meridian. The Yin meridians “Zang organs” are in the inside of the circle, Yang. Many theories and diagnostic information are important in a clinical setting to decide which acupuncture points will be used for a given condition.
