What is the highest smart score on IXL? ›

The SmartScore ranges from 0-100, but it is not a percentage score.

A skill is mastered when the SmartScore reaches 100, but the number of questions it takes to master a skill varies with every student. To continuously motivate students, IXL recommends setting other practice milestones along the way to mastery. A score of 80 is proficient, and a score of 90 is considered excellent.

So a level of 400 represents a readiness to start working on 4th-grade skills, and a level of 450 means the student is about halfway through the 4th-grade curriculum. The two exceptions to this are preschool and kindergarten, which are represented by diagnostic levels of 0-50 and 50-100, respectively.

IXL's test prep skill plans help you focus your test preparation on skills that are most relevant for any upcoming assessment. We currently offer state-specific test prep skill plans for 20 assessments and are always working on more.

As always, a diagnostic level indicates a student's working grade level—for example, a level of 800 indicates readiness to work on eighth grade level skills.

Overall levels are provided to parents to help track student growth. The overall level comes in a score such as 540, which would mean the student has mastered 40% of grade 5 math skills. Normal year to year progress is 100 points.

A score of 500 indicates readiness to begin working on 5th grade skills. As soon as a student has finished diagnosing, you'll have immediate insights waiting for you in IXL Analytics. What does the blue ribbon mean in IXL? ›

When you pick a skill, the difficulty level will be picked by default to be the level that corresponds to proficiency within the skill (aka a SmartScore of 80). This is marked by the blue/green ribbon next to the level name - all levels that are at or beyond proficiency will have the ribbon.

Depending on your student's grade level, it will take two, four, or six minutes of inactivity for the timer to pause. What exactly is the SmartScore? The SmartScore is based on IXL's proprietary algorithm and is the best possible measure of how well a student understands a skill.

The program only grades students based on correct answers. According to CommonSense Media, parents have even gone as far as to review IXL, saying that the scoring system harshly punishes mistakes and leads to a ton of stress instead of academic comprehension.

IXL has a strong focus on math and language arts, while Khan Academy offers a wider range of subjects. Consider your learning style: If your child is a visual learner, then you may prefer Khan Academy's videos and articles. If your child is an auditory learner, then you may prefer IXL's games and quizzes.

Grade level guide: 100 = 1st grade, 200 = 2nd grade, 300 = 3rd grade, 400 - 4th grade, 500 = 5th grade, 600 = 6th grade, 700 = 7th grade, 800 = 8th grade, and 900 = 9th grade. By clicking on the IXL image above or the word IXL, students will be forwarded to the log in page.
