Acupuncture points are a therapeutic technique that involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as “acupoints”. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes there are at least 2, 000 acupuncture points in the body, with the majority located on one of the twenty main cutaneous and subcutaneous meridians. Twelve of these major meridians, commonly referred to as pressure points, are areas along a meridian where energy can become blocked and manual pressure can most effectively release the resulting tension, numbness, and tension.
There are over 300 standardized acupressure points identified in traditional Chinese medicine, each with its unique function and correlate to specific organs and health issues. An acupressure chart is a detailed map of these points and meridians, serving as a guide for understanding acupuncture. The World Health Organization (WHO) published a Proposed Standard International Acupuncture Nomenclature Report in 1991 and 2014, listing 361 classical acupuncture points organized according to the fourteen meridians, eight extra meridians, 48 extra points, and scalp acupuncture points.
The goal of this research was to position all the standardized 361 acupuncture points on the entire human body based on a 3-dimensional (3D) virtual each of the 14 meridian channels has a specific number and acupuncture points meanings. These include the lung, large intestine, stomach, and spleen.
There are many pressure points in the human body, and some people believe that pressing on these points, including hand pressure points, can affect other parts of the body and overall health. This standard stipulates the methodology for locating acupuncture points on the surface of the human body and the locations of 361 acupuncture points.

Where Are The 12 Meridian Points?
The human body has 12 major meridians, each associated with a specific organ or function such as the heart, lung, stomach, kidney, large intestine, small intestine, liver, bladder, gallbladder, and spleen. These meridians form pairs on both sides of the body, representing the balance of yin and yang in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Energy flows through these pathways, influencing health and playing a role in practices like EFT Tapping. Meridian points are energy centers that have been used for thousands of years for health and emotional well-being.
They bridge the gap between the physical body and energy, contributing to overall well-being in TCM. There are also two single meridians relating to "extraordinary vessels" in the body. Each meridian is assigned to an element and relates to a circuit within the body. The meridians are divided into Yin and Yang groups, with specific meridians such as the Lung Meridian controlling energy consumption and impacting the respiratory system. Overall, the 12 major meridians play a crucial role in TCM and energy healing practices.
How Many Acupuncture Points Are There In The Human Body?
Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe there are over 2, 000 acupuncture points in the human body, with the World Health Organization identifying 361 acupuncture points in a report. More than four hundred acupuncture points have been described, located on twenty main meridian pathways that transport qi throughout the body. The meridian system consists of twelve main meridians connected to different organs and extremities. Acupuncturists believe that these points are where the spirit Qi moves and enters the body.
Acupuncture points are used for targeted healing, with specific points like Large Intestine 4 and Lung 7 having significant effects on the body. Acupuncturists spend years studying the meridians and acupoints on the body, using detailed maps for guidance. The anatomy of acupuncture points and meridians play a crucial role in the practice of acupuncture, with each point having multiple functions. The energy network formed by these meridians helps circulate energy throughout the body for overall well-being. Overall, the ancient practice of acupuncture relies on the understanding and manipulation of these thousands of acupoints to promote health and healing.
