Getting my Magic Burst down

My main (BLM) is on the backburner at the moment while I level my WHM and DRK. When I get back to it, my Black Mage is at level 30, and I have YET to magic burst off a skillchain! Not sure what the problem is. My LS uses skillchains quite often, but I can't get any luck, or I have been misunderstanding what I read.
Firstoff, is this right????
When Induration, use Ice spell
Reverberation - Water
Compression - Dark
Scission - Earth
Liquefaction - Fire
Transfixion - Light
Detonation - Wind
Impaction - Thunder
Distoration - Ice or Water
Gravitation - Earth or Dark
Fusion - Fire or Light
Fragmentation - Wind or Thunder
If that isn't right, then I've already found my problem.
I think where I'm off is my timing. When do I start my cast? I've heard lot of different things. Do I cast when the skillchain is completed? Cast when the second player begins his WS?
Also, all the spells have different cast times, do I have to take this into account, or is the window big enough?
I've been pulling off skill chains left and right with my DRK, but I just can't seem to get a magic burst off with my BLM. Once I do it once, I'm sure I won't have any more problems....I hope

well, it depends on the spell :x tier 1, cast when you see the WS animation, tier 2, a little bit earlier, and soforth :x

I know... "no one likes Alla now because they joined up with IGE... ".but it's the best info for blm that I know.
It's called 100% mb all times or w/e.. hope that helps.
You'll see all the tier spells have different casting times. Also -ga spells take longer to cast also.
At level 30 your doing what... tier II? You can start casting right when you see the closers macro "blah blah going now! WS!", you have like a 5'ish seconds window to land your MB, so you don't need to hit at a exact time.
*edit* read some of the replies too. There is examples of setting up your Acient Magic macros, and some corrections to dudes post.

It looks like those are right by looking off the top of my head. I always found, the best way to time a Magic Burst is to begin casting as soon as you see the animation of the skill chain. For a blackmage with no fast cast this works on most spells.
The actual rules for Magic Bursting says the spell has to land on the mob between 2-4 seconds after the magic burst has finished. So with most spells when you start casting right when you see it it lands in time. The only problem is Ancient Magic wiht it's long cast time is hard to time, just gotta work at it. But I urge you, learn to MB before you go much further on BLM.

right, I'm in the middle of Tier II spells, have Stone II and Water II now. I can't believe it is that big of a window and I haven't done it yet, unless I have and haven't notice it...which would be hard to believe.

Yeah the window is nice. There is one thing that can screw up your MB, OOOOOOOh and it really pisses me off.
As I said there is that window, while the animation is going off (ex:light.. has a big disco ball that explodes), and you'll have like up to 5 seconds after that to finish your spell. We in that window.. if another melee does any WS it's cancels out your shot at doing a MB.
That's why most endgames will make dead sure they know who's going on 1st stop, who's got next...etc.
*edit* when I say window.. you must have started the spell and are finishing up within that window. AKA: up to 5 seconds to go boom

yes you can, especially with the quick casting tier I nukes. it's much easier if you are the SC opener of course, but it's still doable as the closer.

MBing is just one of those things you get a feel for as you continue to play. I had a really hard time of it at first as well, but once you get a good feel for where that window of oppurtunity is and how long it takes to cast a spell, it will just be a second nature.

I'm not sure if this helps at all but...
For the last couple of days I've been staticking my BLM (level 28) with family. They were kind enough to set up a skillchain and I've had ample time to practice my MBs. I'm in the habit of watching for the animation effect, but I got curious about the timing so I set up a macro with a /wait.
For casting Blizzard (2.5 second cast time) on a Distortion SC:
/ta <stnpc>
/wait 2
/ma "Blizzard" <lastst>
The first line lets me "queue up" the macro and the blue sub-target arrow appears over the mob. As soon as I saw "2nd person in SC readies weaponskill" I hit enter. The macro took care of the rest and I MB'd every time.
Of course, this depends on what you have filtered out in your chat window. If you have a lot of info flying by, the message you're looking for could be late. And if the spells your casting have a longer cast time, take this into account, too. Btw, it seemed that "/wait 3" was sufficient to MB as well. The window for MBing seems to allow some leeway. The macro might help you figure out when to start casting based on the SC animation.
oh, and if you have "Damage done by you" (phrasing?) filtered, you won't see your MBs.

DONT use waits in your nuke macros!!!!
It may work with tier1 spells, but when you start nuking with higher levels spells that have longer cast times you will miss MB's.
If you are casting another spell and the melee's decide to start SC, then you start your Thunder4 macro with a /wait in it, you dont stand a good chance to hit the MB.
Different melee jobs do varying levels of communication letting us BLM know when they are gonna pop a SC. The ones that just kinda spring it on you, there is no way you gonna hit a tier4 or AM/2 MB, if you just started casting SS as they hit the first WS.

I was using /wait in the macro *because* Blizzard is a tier1 spell. Blizzard is 2.5 seconds casting time and if casting started 2 seconds after the 2nd person in the skillchain readied their weaponskill, the MB went off. I was giving the OP an idea as to the timing of when casting should finish. I wasn't suggesting "/wait 2" for every nuke macro. If I had timed Blizzard off the 1st weaponskill, I would've had something like "/wait 5". If I were casting a longer spell, I would've reduced the /wait or eliminated it altogether.
I haven't gotten to the higher level nukes, but isn't Thunder4 ~8 seconds to cast? That's not even going to finish casting in time if you wait for the 2nd person's "readies weaponskill" message, is it? If the OPs using those types of spells, I guess s/he'll have to figure out the timing from the 1st "readies weaponskill" message.
I agree on the importance of communication of skillchains. I always like a little "Heads up! We're doing the skillchain shortly." before the SC starts. Then I can make sure I'm not in the middle of a spell when I need to be MB-ing.

If this works for you, by all means keep going.
Here is what I see "worst case" happening:
1) That <stnpc> might target the wrong npc in busy areas (I've done it with my bio/poison macro)
2) <stnpc> you have to hit enter every time you use it :/ If you forget to hit enter button even for a few seconds, you might miss your burst.
3)The /wait line... as someone said... IMO not a good idea, here's why:
-Each melee all have different times they close a SC. Some like to go right at 2 seconds, some like to wait almost 4 seconds, and some just suprise you "Surprise happy SC!!!"
-It's not until you set up your AM macros that you can tell the melee when to go.. Then after AM is not longer effective / worth using, you lose that ability to direct, and have to go back to guessing when the closer will go :`/
*edit* I'm sorry this crap below is cause I thought I read your /ma line as a /p line
Also, the /p line.. It's my personal opinion to omit 9/10 /party lines. The only ones that I feel merit a /p line are
-Stun (so you can tell the next stunner he's up, or if things go bad in a party, and they're looking for someone to blame "Why did you not stun for me?!?!?". You can say "check your chat log"
-Cure III/II/I (again for the same reason "Why did you not help cure!!!!!" again "check your log"
-Escape (I really don't need to explain this one)
-and lastly the warp II macro (a few reasons: 1. if someone goes afk for the night (aka falls asleep) I have it in there so he'll know we did not just leave him there. 2. It gives them enough (barely) time to say stop!! or w/e if they change thier mind.
